Christmas Shoot Bloopers

Bloopers

For some reason during our Christmas shoot I got the *grand* idea of doing a cartwheel or handstand for my section of the photo. I'd already taken the other photos, and so Stew was behind the camera this time. It was a funny few minutes while I tried to cartwheel in jeans (it's hard! What was I thinking?? And it's not the most flattering look!) and then with Zoë running into the frame during the crucial moments!! (Stew saying - 'sorry, didn't get it, try it again!' LOL. I'm sure he was saying that on purpose just so they could laugh at me a little longer!) Anyhow, I went for a handstand, and after that I was going to do some normal shots of me upright. But Stew said (in good humour) 'No way, since when are you normal?', LOL, so no normal shots were taken, and we ended up with the shot you see in the post below. But here are some of the bloopers! (see me screaming in the bottom right one!!)

Hope you're having a great Sunday!

Have a Cool Yule!

Wishing all of you a wonderful Christmas or holiday (whatever special occasion you celebrate at this time of year!) and hope that you enjoy some special time with your loved ones! Thank you to all of my blog readers and friends who are sharing this crazy journey with me - I appreciate all of your comments and emails, and hope to see many of you in person again in the new year!! :)

The photo above is our annual photo shoot together... and I didn't intend to handstand... just happened.... you know how it is when you start mucking around with the kids (and end up being a kid yourself!) We were doing some crazy cartwheels too. I'll add some out-takes tomorrow!

And thinking of my brother Pete who is trekking through Tasmania this week - and should summit Cradle Mountain today!!! Woo Hoo!

Have a wonderful day!!!

A is for Avoca Beach

Avoca_centralcoast_web_2

Glorious weather. Wade in the rock pools. Dig in the sand. Jump over the small waves. Fun in the sun. Happy kids. Lots of sunscreen. Watch the fisherman. Explore the rocks. Play on the swings. Eat ice blocks. Check out Avoca Beach Theatre. Chat to the owner. They are expanding and adding 2 new cinemas and bringing back their Alfresco movies. Yay! It's been a while since I've gone to that theatre. Stew & I used to go there on dates. Have been to many a beach party at Avoca too. Wild stories! Some I've forgotten but have photographic evidence. Anyway, back to today. Antique store. Arts & Craft shops. Zoë broke a ceramic pig. Had to buy the ceramic pig. Lucky the pig was only $3.50. Happy that the pig was pink. Bought a purple pig too. Purple pig isn't broken. Yet. Bought the paper. Walk along the shops. Check out the lake. Watch the canoeists. Have photographed a few weddings here in the past. Looked in a few art & photography galleries. Wonderful way to spend the morning. A is for Avoca Beach.

The New South Wales Central Coast

Map_centralcoast_2

I've lived on the NSW Central Coast on and off for the past 17 years. I originally moved there in 1990 when I needed to complete Yrs 11 & 12 at high school and the school I was attending at Tottenham (in rural NSW) only went to Yr 10. So I moved to the Central Coast and lived with my grandparents. After finishing school in 1991 I moved away, went to Uni, traveled, and didn't return to the coast until 1997... and have lived here ever since! Even though I've lived here for almost half of my life, there are still many areas of the coast that I don't know too well. This summer I have decided to remedy that and explore the coast from A-Z!  Ethan is on school holidays and we're going to see how many areas we can conquer together before he goes back to school. Tomorrow we'll start with a suburb starting with A!  It should be a fun little project!

The map above shows the whole Central Coast area. The green arrow is where our house is.

Mr Dick-sticker has left the building...

Thanks to all of you who were interested in playing with Mr Dick-sticker, also known as Mr Budgie Smuggler, or Mr Banana Hammock! The names just keep rolling in!

He is now headed on his journey. Here is where he'll be stopping:

  1. Sarah S
  2. Jayne
  3. Evonne
  4. Sarah G
  5. Bec
  6. Michelle (via Kelsey's blog)

So keep an eye out on those blogs for his whereabouts and what little artworks are created with him. I'd like to see how dirty (and I mean inky!) he will be when he returns. :) So his journey begins...

And we have some winners!!!! The stash of stamps have been won by 2 people! I had put everyone's name into the little bags on our advent calendar and asked my children to pull out a name each - hence why there's 2 winners. I'll split the stamps up, but will also add a mixture of other goodies like Filmstrips and all sorts of fun things that I can find here in the studio! So congrats to Robyn Wood and Jane Norrish! I hope you enjoy your goodies!

This yummy parcel arrived in my mailbox today. It was a RAK from Gina who had won a RAK from Ginny - included in Ginny's rak was this book The 1000 Journals Project. Gina already had a copy, so she then passed it onto me! I am thrilled beyond measure, as I have heard about this book and the whole project but had never seen this book in real life. I've read a few pages already, and the artwork is so fun to look at. Thankyou Gina and Ginny for gifting me this book! Don't you also love the tag Gina created with my initials? It's all in the details...

This book has also gotten me thinking on starting a few traveling journals. I have a couple of journals here that I am working in, but none of them are traveling. One is titled 'Self Portraits' and I have anyone who comes to my house draw their self portrait in the journal. It will take a while to fill (there's so many pages!), but is a fun ongoing project. I've participated in a number of other peoples traveling journals, & circle journal groups with friends, plus friendship books & SLAMS (when I was in my teens, anyone know those?), but I'd love to send a few random blank journals out there into the world to see what happens to them. Do you create journals? Do you collaborate in them? I'd love to hear your experiences... please share if you have any stories to tell... or maybe you'd like to participate in one of my journals?

Only 5 more sleeps here until the man in red arrives!

Learn something new everyday...

I have never heard of the term 'budgie smugglers'! Hilarious that there's so many different terms for the humble Speedo!

Thanks to all of you who are interested in playing with Mr Dick-sticker!!! So you all have minds like mine, huh!! LOL. Glad I'm not alone on this one. Sign ups have closed, and I have actually contacted the first 6 people who commented, but am awaiting confirmation that they're still willing to play. I'll see how Round 1 goes, and if we still think it's fun to play later on, then we'll continue it later with the rest of you if you're still keen :)

I'll be back later with a winner of the other stash of stamps too. If you're keen to have these stamps in your stash, then comment here or in the post below, and I'll draw a winner in the next day or two for that!

In the meantime, I'll leave you with a photo from a project I'm working on right now...

Mr Dick-sticker's in da house!

Necklace A month or so ago, my inky friend Robin cleaned out her stamp stash and had a giveaway on her blog... You may remember my post from here saying that if I won, I'd pass them on to one of my blog readers... so here's your chance. But first, check out what else was in the parcel.... over here on the left. Robin made the most beautiful soldered pendant with her famous bandana technique! I love it - perfect colours for me! Thank you so much Robin. It totally made my day!

Also - I need to share with you Mr Dick-sticker! (It's not the actual name of this stamp, I've just given him this nickname.) This saucy stamp was among those from Robin's stash, and if you're not familiar with the Aussie slang term dick-sticker, then here's a description: "dick-stickers" (Lycra underwear-style togs named for their clinging qualities when wet). And if you're not familiar with 'Togs', they basically mean swim wear. Ok, enough of the slang...

So after I was announced the winner of Robin's interesting stamp stash, I promised I would make a card using Mr Dick-sticker. So here he is:
Mrdicksticker
I'm sure there are many uses for this guy! I'd love to make him a traveling exhibition just for a bit of fun, so I'm going to start a challenge: *** I've changed the challenge a little bit, so he ends up back home with me.... please forgive me, I couldn't bear (bare!) to part with him forever! I have too many ideas for him! So see below for the new 'Round Robin' stamp challenge (also a very fitting title since the stamp was from Robin. Oh I'm just full of puns!! LOL)) So here we go...***

1. Post a comment here saying "I want to play with Mr Dick-sticker!' if you wish to participate. I will need 6 participants all up.
2. I will pick the names at random, and this will become the 'Round Robin' list. I will send the stamp to the first person on the list.
3. Create something using this stamp, and upload your project to your own blog/gallery. Email me with a link to your 'Dick-sticker project' so I can post the link up here on my blog so we can all see what you create with him! (remember, this is just all in good fun, so create whatever you want!)
4. Then send the stamp to the next person on the list to continue on... the 6th person sends him back home to me :)

So if you're interested, let me know in your comment. (You can still comment, even if you don't want to participate.) I'll just choose a name from those who want him!! :)

But wait there's more.... as promised, here is the rest of the stamp stash!! If you're keen to add these to your own stash, leave a comment, and I'll pick a name at random for these too!!Stamps
Fun and games...

A story of triumph

P9080050

Last Friday Ethan had his first swimming carnival with his school. Looking at the photo above, you'd think he's a fish. But it wasn't always this way... Ethan's history with swimming has been a rocky road. He has always been petrified of swimming. He was like a leech on our backs, always gripping on, and he's not a short kid, so having a 130cm lanky kid hanging off your back wasn't our idea of swimming!  Swimming lessons were always a disaster. He is capable, but just lacked the confidence, regardless of all the encouragement both his teachers and we would give him. He just dissolved into tears every time we tried to get him to swim. This year was crunch time. He was starting Kindergarten and a lot of his friends have pools (we don't), and he needed to learn how to swim once and for all. I enrolled him in lessons, and spoke with the teacher about his, let's say... lack of enthusiasm for the pool. I needed a teacher who was going to be strong, firm, and encouraging. The first couple of lessons were hard. Ethan screamed. I sat there watching feeling incredibly helpless, yet knowing he needed to do this for his own safety.

However, within a few weeks, his teacher had him swimming like a fish. And enjoying it! We've swam on average twice a week all of this year, even through the coldest winter (in heated pools). He has progressed from Level 4 to Level 8, and swims freestyle, backstroke and is now learning breaststroke. He swims 25m up the pool, turns around and swims back. He does this 4 or 5 times in a row. His strength is backstroke.

So last Friday was his swimming carnival. The Kindergarten kids do mainly novelty games in the pool, but there is also an optional 25m race. The Yr 6 kids are in the lanes to help them along if they need it. One of Ethan's goals this year was to go in the race, but a few days before the carnival he told me that  he couldn't swim that far. He said he's never swam that far. I reminded him he had in fact swims further than that every week. He stood there for a moment, and then says "If I believe I can do it... then I can'.

And he did. I watched as he walked up to the starting block, waited for the whistle, and dived into the pool along with many of his schoolmates. It was a crazy race, kids all over the place, with all the parents cheering from the sidelines! A total hoot! The race wasn't timed, and it was so close between them all, but Ethan thinks he came 3rd or 4th. I'm just so proud that he had the courage to dive into the pool and give it a go! He's just so proud that he finished!

What a year. What an achievement! So happy :)

Edited to add: The photo above was taken with our point & shoot camera. It's an Olympus u770 SW, 7.1 megapixel, shock and waterproof. We bought it mainly because of the shock and waterproof capabilities. It's a nifty little camera, I've dropped it on the cement and it still works a treat. So the shock proof is correct! And we've obviously gone swimming with it, so it's definitely waterproof! We have a lot of fun with it.

Christmas Shoot Out-takes

Rachstew_dec2007_2
So technically these aren't really out takes, but they are  ones that won't be used on our Christmas photo... and according to the rest of the family I am not allowed to share anything that resembles what the 'real' photo looks like. (and trust me, there's some real out-takes!!) That's because some of you are on my Christmas card list and will be receiving the real photo in the mail... and we don't want to spoil it. There's no amazing surprise, but we just think it would be better to see the real thing in your hands first. I will share it here on Christmas Day too.Zoe_dec2007_2

In the meantime... check out how good Ethan is at taking pictures! He took this one of Stew & I together. (sorry if you wanted to see them bigger - they are only as big as you see them here.)

For those who have never visited me on the Central Coast (or even in Australia), this is Shelley Beach, and the main road behind our house takes you right there. (It's about 5 kms away) I don't use this beach for photo shoots often, but I do take the kids down here some afternoons for them to run around and play. There are some great little rock pools around too. The tide was high yesterday, so most of the rockpools were covered, and the only big rock visible was covered in moss, so a bit slippery for the kids. But they LOVE running around in the water (and swimming when it gets a bit warmer).

The weather was gorgeous yesterday afternoon, and now we have thunderstorms (I LOVE the smell of fresh rain), so summer is all over the place so far!

Also - check out Tim's blog, he's doing a 12 Days of Christmas technique showdown and giveaway! Completely cool stuff....

November Calendar

Another month gone, and this one went really really quickly! Did you think that too? This month's photo is a crazy one of the kids licking sand... honestly, small things amuse... but this photo makes me laugh. My kids are such clowns.

Also, here is a shot of the complete Ornate Star collection from the past 12 days!  I am so pleased that you've enjoyed watching what I came up with, both Christmas themed or not. I do hope it has given you some ideas for those who already own the Ornate Star stamp, and I hope it may have inspired you to look at your current stamp stash in new ways.

We're going to do a shoot this arvo to send with our Christmas cards, so it'll be interesting to see how that goes! I have a rough 'plan' but it's certainly not the 'sit and smile at the camera' type of shot. I wish I had a helicopter, it would have been awesome to shoot this from the air looking down. Anyway... if all goes well, I may share one or two shots tomorrow.
